Girinagar is a residential area in South West Bangalore, very close to Mysore Road. It is named after the former Indian president,V.V.Giri.
The area is famous for its hilly terrain, along with Mahalakshmi Layout. A purely residential area, it is divided into 4 phases. A major chunk of the population are Brahmins.
The area is also famous for its numerous temples such as Avadootha Datta Peetham(Karyasiddhi Anjaneya Temple), Shree Ramachandrapura Matha, Sri Vasavi Kanyakaparameshwari Temple, Sri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple, Sringeri Mutt, Sri Raghavendra Mutt etc. A Sanskrit school, Aksharam, is also located here.
Many good schools such as Auden Public School, Little Flower Public School etc. are located in the vicinity. It also has a large hospital(Radhakrishna Hospital) and supermarkets(Nilgiris, More). However restuarants are very less in number. The main shopping area near to Girinagar is Gandhi Bazaar(3 km away).
Girinagar has a famous hill, Veeranna Gutte or Hirannaya Gudda, where entire Bangalore city can be viewed. It also has 2 big parks, Avalahalli BDA Park and Vivekananda Park, having a statue of Swami Vivekananda. There is a theatre, Venkateshwara, in this area.
This area has many famous residents like Ravi Subramanya(BasavanagudiMLA), Vidyashankar(former Chief Election Commisioner of Karnataka) etc.
As for public transport, it is well connected with frequent buses(36A, P10) and also with less frequent but regular buses(36B, 37E).
