Basavanagudi is a residential and commercial locality bordering Jayanagar and located in South Bangalore. The name "Basavanagudi" derives from the famous ‘Bull Temple’ that is located here. ‘Basava’ in Kannada means Bull and ‘Gudi’ means temple. The Bull Temple is one of the oldest temples in Bangalore and is dedicated to Lord Shiva's ‘Vahana’ , Nandi the bull.

This gigantic monlolith measures 4.57m (15 feet) in height and 6.10 m (20 feet) in length

The annual Groundnut Festival (Kadalekayi Parishe) is held near the temple premises during the month of November- December when the groundnut crop is harvested.

Basavanagudi is one of the oldest areas in Bangalore with wide tree lined avenues dotted with houses. Commercialization has taken a toll in this area with excessive tree felling to introduce residential and business structures. The famous LalBagh Botanical Gardens are an integral part of Basavangudi. Started initially as a private garden in an area of 40 acres by Hyder Ali, the famous Mysore ruler in 1760 and initially designed in Mughal style, this garden was further developed by Hyder Ali’s son Tipu Sultan. Lal Bagh today is a 240 acre garden and has over 1,854 species of exotic flora.

DVG Road, named after Dr. D.V. Gundappa the eminent writer who was responsible for the setting up of Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) located in Bull Temple Road, and Gandhi Bazaar one of the oldest bazaars in Bangalore, are the main commercial hubs. In Gandhi Bazaar you will find Vidyarthi Bhavan famous for its vegetarian fare especially “Masala Dosas” and also the Ramakrishna Ashram.

Thyagarajanagar is one of the oldest localities in Bangalore. It is part of Basavanagudi in South Bangalore. This area is home to several religious temples and has devotional and religious activities year round. The famous Sai Baba Temple is also located in TR nagar.

Shankarpuram is famous for and named after the 102 years old Sri Sringeri Shankara Math located here. Shankarpuram is also clustered with lots of Hindu temples. The National College of Bangalore is located here, which was started by Dr. H Narsasimhaiah. The Gayana Samaja conducts musical programs every month.
